Taiwan Naval Fleet

月曜日に台湾の海軍艦隊３隻がマジュロに来ました。その１隻がデラップドッグに停泊しました。全長150mある大きな船です。火曜日に船内が一般公開されました。

The Taiwan Naval Fleet consisted of three vessels that came to Majuro Atoll this past Monday. One of them dropped anchor at Delap Dock. That was a very big 150-meters vessel. The inboard was opened to the public on Tuesday.

マジュロにはラグーン側にこのような立派な船着き場があることを初めて発見。コプラ工場の裏手です。豪華客船もいけるのではないでしょうか。

I realized that there is a nice wharf that a big ship can anchor at behind the copra factory in the lagoon. It even seemed big enough to anchor a luxury liner.

約850人の水兵が上陸しました。2日間マジュロで過ごしました。レストラン、NTA、郵便局、ハンディクラフトショップにとっては経済が潤う一大イベントです。

About 850 sailors landed. They spent time in Majuro for two days. It was a very good chance for the local restaurants, NTA, the Post Office and the handicraft shops in Majuro to get money from them.

NTAもドックに臨時テレフォンブースを設置。本社のインターネットカフェにも多くの人が来ました。彼らはマジュロでの生活を観光客のように楽しんでいました。彼らの多くは1年の徴兵で来ていました。なので普通の市民のようでした。厳しい訓練を受けた水兵には見えません。

NTA placed a special telephone booth at the dock. So many sailors also came to the Internet cafe at NTA headquarters. They enjoyed their time in Majuro like sightseers. I found out that they were almost all one-year conscripted sailors. They looked like normal citizens, not well-trained sailors.

このイベントは毎年の恒例となっていますが、台湾の徴兵制が廃止されるので来年の開催は微妙かもしれません。

来年は豪華客船が日本から定期的に来てくれると嬉しいですね。

This event is a yearly established custom. However, the Taiwan government will end conscription in 2014. And the government might end this event.

I hope a luxury liner comes to visit Majuro regularly from Japan next year.

ドックにはコプラ工場の臨時ブースもありました。ココナッツ石けんをおみやげ用に60個買ってしまいました。

今月末から1ヶ月、定期健診の為、日本に一時帰国します。

There was the special booth of the copra factory at the dock. I bought 60 packs of coconut soap there for gifts.

I'm going back to Japan this month for one month for a yearly medical checkup.
