A different way to enjoy Eneko island
エネコ島のちょっと違う楽しみ方
エネコ島は週末によくピクニックに行く場所です。海岸でスノーケリングが楽しめます。沢山の種類の小さな魚が観れます。
エネコ島はマジュロ環礁を形成する島の一つでラグーン側のShorelineから定期便が出ています。20分ほどで着きます。
People in Majuro go on a picnic to Eneko island sometimes on weekends. It is a nice place to go snorkeling and watch many kinds of small tropical fish under the sea.
Eneko island is a rounded part of Majuro Atoll. It takes about 20 minutes to get there by boat from the Shoreline dock in the lagoon.
先週の土曜日はエネコ島への定期便で行くお客が少なく4人だけでした。ボートの運転はキャプテン「ゼロ」です。彼の名前がサジェストした通り、ほとんど占有状態でした。
There were just four people headed to the island by the scheduled boat on Saturday last week. Captain "Zero" took us to the island. It sounded nice. As his name suggested, the island was almost dedicated for us. It was like a private island.
管理人の方が常駐しています。4人のお客しかいなかったので私たちの面倒をすごくよくみてくれました。おかげで今回はいつもとは違う日帰り旅行を楽しむことができました。
A caretaker lives on Eneko island with his family. Because there were only four of us, he took good care of us. We really enjoyed the one-day visit on the island in a different way.
パンダナスのかじり方を知る
島の管理人の方がパンダナスをとってくれました。もぎとった円錐状の果実の両端をナイフで切り落とします。そして、繊維にそってかじるのです。こうやって食べるのか！楽にかじれます。
Learning how to chew pandanus fruit
The caretaker picked a pandanus fruit hanging from a pandanus tree. He picked a conical portion from the fruits and cut off both ends of it with a knife. He then showed us how to bite it along the fiber. I found it's very easy to chew it in this way.
落ちてるココナッツの味
管理人の方が落ちているココナッツをもってきてくれました。長い間放置され、水分がなくなって中央部が固まったものです。中央部を取り出してくれました。砂糖がはいっていない柔らかいビスケットのようでした。
Taste of fallen coconuts
The caretaker also brought us fallen coconuts. In these fallen coconuts, the coconut water already went away naturally and the central part hardened by being left a long time on the ground. He cracked open the coconut and gave me the hardened part. It was like a soft biscuit without sugar.
新鮮なココナッツジュース
小振りのココナッツです、木から取ってくれました。外がらをはがします。後は自分で穴をあけて飲みます。取れ立てのものはからに水分が残っているので簡単です。私の好きな適度に熟れたココナッツでした。
Real fresh coconut juice
He then pulled small-sized coconuts out of a tree and husked them. It was very easy for me to make a hole to drink on the top of the coconut because of its freshness. It was a mid-ripened coconut just the kind I like.
ノニジュースの果実を発見する
ノニジュースはこの国では割とポピュラーのようです。この島にも休憩小屋のそばに果実と木を見つけました。ちょうど一昨日友人宅で少量飲ませてもらったばかりです。なるほど、きつい匂いはありますが慣れれば苦にならないと思いました。身体にはよいとのことです。
Finding fruits of "Noni" juice
Noni juice seems relatively popular in this country. I found a noni tree with a ripe fruit near the hut on the island. I tried noni juice at my friend's house for the first time just the day before yesterday. There was the bad smell but I don't think it would bother me if I used it often. I heard it is good for health.
もちろん今回もスノーケリングを楽しみました。
We enjoyed snorkeling as well.

管理人の方は奥さんと2人の子供とこの島に暮らしています。はじめは野性的な感じがしましたが、とてもよい人で紳士的でした。マーシャル人のホスピタリティをここでも感じました。
知らない人と出会うと新たな発見があります。マーシャルに来て7ヶ月いろいろ経験しましたが、やはり人とのふれあいが一番楽しいです。
The caretaker lives with his wife and two children on the island. He seemed wild from his looks at first sight. However, he was so nice and so gentle to us all the time. That reminded me of Marshallese hospitality here again.
There is new discovery when I meet new people. I've experienced a lot since I came to the Marshall Islands seven months ago. After all, the contact with people is the most fun.
